Between 2008 and 2023, AWARD has supported the growth and development of 682 Nigerian researchers and leaders. Out of these beneficiaries, 137 were Fellows and 545 were trainees on various courses. In addition, 48 fellows were supported to take part in Advance Science Training (AST) research attachments.

AWARD supported a comprehensive situational and gap analysis of the strengths, limitations, opportunities, and threats related to gender equality and accountability in Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB)'s systems, programs, processes, and policies as part of the institution's change process. This led to the development of a detailed plan that received significant in-kind support from FUNAAB.

Our work in Nigeria

  • Online training sessions on gender: AWARD conducted virtual training sessions on gender in November 2021, which over 100 staff members attended.
  • Online coaching sessions: AWARD provided online coaching clinics in November 2021 to enhance scientific skills and provide further support on theoretical and empirical approaches to gender, agriculture, science, and technology.
  • Stakeholder meeting: The stakeholder meeting aimed to review the implementation of the first phase of Gender Responsive Agricultural Research and Development (GRARD), which was piloted through FUNAAB in Nigeria.
  • Institutional needs assessment: A comprehensive analysis was conducted to identify the strengths, limitations, opportunities, and threats related to gender equality and accountability in FUNAAB's systems, programs, processes, and policies.
  • Gender policy review: A detailed guide was developed with in-kind support from FUNAAB to guide FUNAAB's plan of action for overall strategy, programming and research processes and conducive work environment.
  • Capacity building interventions: In 2019 investing in more than 150 FUNAAB staff members (senior managers, administrators, and researchers). The courses delivered included an Institutional Mentoring Orientation Workshop; a Progress Monitoring Meeting (PMM), a Science Writing Course & Publishing Skills Course and a Leadership and Assertiveness Course.
  • Country Chapter Engagement: In May 2019, 40 students from the Abadina Grammer School participated in the lab experiments. Representatives of the Nigerian Chapter (NiWARD) organized a role modelling and mentoring event during which they spoke passionately about embracing career in sciences. AWARD’s support for NiWARD included the 8th National Conference and Annual General Virtual Meeting (November 9-11, 2020) themed “Sustainable Agricultural Development through Innovations and Global Linkages” and a training on “Transfer of selected post-harvest technologies to rural women farmers in North Central, Nigeria” (May 21-July 11th, 2021), and schools outreach programs (June 8-9, 2021) at United High School Ikenne Remo and Comprehensive High School, Ilishan Remo, Ogun State.

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English.

Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

Nigeria Country Chapter

About

Was created to give Nigerian scientists and agricultural researchers who have been chosen as African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) Fellows, a much-needed platform to transfer the knowledge and skills gained through the Fellowship Program to transform the rural agricultural sector in Nigeria.

Through NiWARD, the Fellows, their mentors and mentees will work to empower and build the capacity of rural farmers including women and their communities to fight hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. Additionally, their efforts in collaboration with rural farming communities will transform the Nigerian agricultural sector and push the National Agricultural Transformation Agenda forward, in line with the Government’s policy to grow this sector.

Mission

NiWARD has over 200 Fellows, Mentors and Mentees participating in the Program from the 6 regions of Nigeria. They are carrying out research and implementing projects to transform Nigeria’s rural agricultural sector.

 Website: http://niward.org/about-us

Objectives

  • Promote engagement among AWARD Fellows in Nigeria and the Regional community to boost sustainable agricultural development;
  • Promote capacity building through training in scientific research with rural communities nationally to enhance agricultural productivity, livelihoods and farm incomes as well as competitiveness along the commodity value chains;
  • Promote gender equality in science and technology for agricultural empowerment and innovation for women and youths nationally;
  • Contribute to rural development, poverty reduction, food security and sustainable use of agricultural resources in Nigeria;
  • Partner with the Federal and the State governments to support local women at the grassroots level to grow their farming businesses by facilitating access to technological and financial support systems;
  • Engage with our leaders at the local level (Obas, Chiefs, community leaders and decision makers); train them on gender-related issues in order to gain their support for gender and youth development that will result in national economic growth and wealth creation.

Goals

To empower and build the capacity of rural farmers including women and their communities to fight hunger, malnutrition, and poverty.

NIGERIA Country Chapters

NiWARD (Nigerian Women in Agricultural Research and Development) was established to provide a platform for Nigerian scientists and agricultural researchers chosen as African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) Fellows to share the knowledge and skills they gained through the Fellowship Program. This initiative aims to empower rural farmers, especially women, and their communities to combat hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. With over 200 Fellows, Mentors, and Mentees from across Nigeria, NiWARD is engaged in research and projects to transform the country's rural agricultural sector. Its mission includes fostering collaboration among AWARD Fellows in Nigeria, promoting capacity building through scientific research in rural communities, advancing gender equality in agriculture, contributing to rural development and food security, and partnering with governments to support local women in agriculture. Additionally, NiWARD seeks to engage local leaders to promote gender and youth development for national economic growth.
