Between 2008 and 2024, AWARD facilitated the growth and development of 253 researchers and leaders from Malawi. Out of the fellowship beneficiaries, 137 were fellowship beneficiaries. Twenty (20) Fellows were sponsored to partake in Advance Science Training (AST) research attachments. Additionally, AWARD has enhanced the skills of 117 trainees on leadership, science, mentoring, and gender, drawn from various institutions in Malawi, including but not limited to Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) among others.

Our work in Malawi

  • Women Leadership Program: In collaboration with The Regional University Forum for Capacity Building in Africa (RUFORUM), AWARD delivered a Women's Leadership Program for 15 female civil servants from June 2017.
  • Leadership Program for Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR): In September 2017, The Regional University Forum for Capacity Building in Africa (RUFORUM) and the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) partnered with African Women in Agricultural Research & Development (AWARD) to deliver a four-day residential tailored Leadership Program for Agricultural Research & Development (LEPARD) leadership program for its senior leadership and management staff including the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Directors, Deans, Heads of Departments and Heads of Sections. The LEPARD program equipped 56 participants with skills to lead teams as well as forge teamwork amongst staff at all levels. The LEPARD course is created for senior to middle level Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D) leaders. The purpose of the course is to strengthen AR4D institutions by providing leadership skills based on core values of inclusiveness, performance, transparency, integrity and efficiency.

 

Malawi Country Chapter

About

The Malawi AWARD Chapter (MAWARD) has been in operation since June 2016 when the inception meeting for the chapter was held, although individual efforts date back several years before then. The chapter brings together Malawian alumni of the African Women in Agriculture, Research and Development (AWARD) fellowship in an attempt to sustain the impacts registered through the fellowship by enhancing collaboration, sharing best practices and networking for agricultural transformation in Malawi. 

Objectives

  1. To build capacity of individuals and institutions in agricultural research, policy analysis, leadership and mentoring.
  2. To provide mentoring and role modelling opportunities for younger women scientists and students.
  3. To promote the implementation of gender responsive agricultural research and development.
  4. To establish partnerships for projects that address Malawi’s agricultural challenges.

Goals
