Empowering African women scientists through career-development fellowships

Overview

Between 2008 and 2015, AWARD sponsored 460 fellowships. All their stories are in the publication. Maybe not in their own words because we don’t have room to include 460 interviews, but in the numbers, in the data, in the insights and lessons learned that have emerged through the ongoing M&E activities that have followed AWARD Fellows throughout their fellowships, and now beyond, thanks to new survey information from AWARD alumni.

Lessons Learned

Institutions

AWARD is enhancing institutional capacity to conduct gender-responsive research and supporting institutions to embrace and adopt gender-responsive policies and practices. AWARD is investing in building a critical mass of AWARD alumni to influence institutional policies and practices. We are investing in a training hub for leadership, mentoring, science skills, and gender in agri-food systems.

Individuals

AWARD invests in building a pool of capable, confident, and influential African scientists to lead critical advances and innovations in the agricultural research and development sector (ARD).

Through career development programs and other customized interventions, we equip African researchers with various skills including leadership, mentoring, science, grant writing, negotiation, gender in agri-food systems networking and communication skills.

Agropolis Fondation

In its mission to promote and support high-level agricultural research for sustainable development, in 2009, Agropolis Fondation entered into a partnership with AWARD to build the science skills of African women scientists though the AWARD Fellowship.
